The OMG! Gift for Holiday 2008: The Keyboard for Blondes
Forget all those bland, boring, brunette-centric keyboards once foisted upon us by bland, boring, brunette manufacturers. Finally, here is the Geek Chic we Blondes deserve.
European Trends has already released their hot pink Keyboard for Blondes in the U.K. and based on a strange video now available on youtube, it’s also sparking some major Blonde Moments in Russia.
The pink keyboard swaps out standard keys with more blonde-appropriate names. The backspace key now says “Oops!” and the entire row of function keys spells out USELESS KEYS. Hit the “$” sign and you get the sound of a cash register clinking.
The Keyboard even has special keys that type out “OMG,” “ALI” (Absolutely Love It!), or “XOXO.”
The best? The Caps Lock now says: “Warning! size XXL letters.”
At $49.95, it’s compatible with Mac, Windows, Linux, and Paris Hilton.

Now That’s Jerry’s Finally Given Up The Royal Purple, Who Will Be Yahoo’s Next CEO?
Techcrunch is reporting that Jerry Yang is finally stepping down as CEO of the company he founded — but will remain as Chief Yahoo. The stock closed today at $10.63, legions away from the $33 Microsoft offered for the company last spring.
Scuttlebutt centers on Sue Decker and a possible return of tech veteran Dan Rosensweig.
Here’s the official press release:
Yahoo! Conducting Search for New CEO
Co-Founder Jerry Yang to Step Down Following Appointment of New CEO
and Return to Former Role as Chief Yahoo! and Board Member
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Nov 17, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) –
Yahoo! Inc. (Nasdaq:YHOO) today announced that its Board of Directors has initiated a search for a new Chief Executive Officer. Jerry Yang, co-Founder of Yahoo!, has decided to return to his former role as Chief Yahoo! upon the appointment of his successor as CEO, and he will also continue to serve on the Board. Yang, 40, assumed the CEO role at the Board’s request in June 2007, and he has led Yahoo! through a strategic repositioning and transformation of its platform.
Chairman Roy Bostock, working with the independent directors and in consultation with Jerry Yang, is leading the process of assessing potential candidates and determining finalists for consideration. The search will encompass both internal and external candidates, and the Board has retained Heidrick & Struggles, a leading international executive search firm, to assist in the process.
“Over the past year and a half, despite extraordinary challenges and distractions, Jerry Yang has led the repositioning of Yahoo! on an open platform model as well as the improved alignment of costs and revenues,” said Roy Bostock. “Jerry and the Board have had an ongoing dialogue about succession timing, and we all agree that now is the right time to make the transition to a new CEO who can take the company to the next level. We are deeply grateful to Jerry for his many contributions as CEO over the past 18 months, and we are pleased that he plans to stay actively involved at Yahoo! as a key executive and member of the Board.”
“From founding this company to guiding its growth into a trusted global brand that is indispensible to millions of people, I have always sought to do what is best for our franchise,” said Jerry Yang. “When the Board asked me to become CEO and lead the transformation of the Company, I did so because it was important to re-envision the business for a different era to drive more effective growth. Having set Yahoo! on a new, more open path, the time is right for me to transition the CEO role and our global talent to a new leader. I will continue to focus on global strategy and to do everything I can to help Yahoo! realize its full potential and enhance its leading culture of technology and product excellence and innovation.”

Yahoo and AOL Go On A Second Date?
It’s been rumored all week. Yahoo and AOL are leaping beyond eyelash-batting and late-night IM’s, and taking that getting-serious next step: the Second Date. Proof that the flirtation has gone past speed dating? They’re introducing their books to each other, engaging in ‘meaningful’ due diligence.
Does this mean a merger (wink-wink) is on the way? Or is Yahoo leading AOL on, like it did to ex-swain Microsoft, who Mom really-really would have loved? Or will Google’s search advertising partnership once again stand in the way of a deeply satisfying monogamous relationship for the Purple One?
Then there’s on-again, off-again Time Warner, who Yahoo turned to after Microsoft got a touch too possessive last spring. “Just because you have $47.5 billion doesn’t mean you can act like you own me!” snapped Yahoo, stomping out of Starbucks in awesome Sarah Lacy-style boots.
And then, like it was so random, but somehow Microsoft read some tweetsabout Yahoo’s hook-ups with Google and TW, and got ticked and yanked its $33-per-share proposal like right before summer vacation. But when Yahoo turned back to Google, thinking they could still be bffs, Google made up some bogus excuse about the government or the FBI or something not letting them be together.
Now everybody’s shares are way down, especially Yahoo’s, which crashed by 63%. So this Second Date, is like, HUGE. To help the courtship along, Guru turned to the romance experts at AskMen.com, who offer up this advice on how to handle that important Second Date:
So you made it to the second date. Good job. You’re relieved, you obviously made a good impression and she wants to see you again, but now what? What is she expecting? And, more importantly, what could ruin the potentially good thing you have going on?
K.I.S.S: Keep it simple stupid.
Don’t do anything spectacular or you’ll scare her off. Plan an activity that’s different from the first date, but make sure it’s nothing too demanding. The second date is about getting to know each other better. Have a few options planned, but don’t force her to choose or she’ll feel put on the spot.
Wise words.

Apple Reports $1.14 Billion Profit as Sales Jump 27%
TECHNOLOGY ALERT
from The Wall Street Journal.
Oct. 21, 2008
Apple reported a $1.14 billion profit as sales jumped 27% to $7.9 billion, as demand for the company’s premium products held up amid the souring economy. CEO Steve Jobs said he was unsure “how this economic downturn will affect Apple” and the company gave a wide range of financial targets for the holiday quarter. In the September quarter, unit shipments of Macintosh computers rose 21%, while iPod unit shipments rose 8%. The company also shipped 6.9 million iPhones.
Guru’s Note: My daughter just gave me a luscious new Nano Chromatic in Guru Orange. I think Apple will still shine during the holidays.

Just In: Yahoo Plans to Cut 10% of its Work Force.
TECHNOLOGY ALERT from The Wall Street Journal.
Oct. 21, 2008
Yahoo announced another restructuring effort that seeks to cut annual expenses by $400 million, including plans to cut at least 10% of its work force. The Internet giant reported a 64% drop in quarterly profit and revenue that was flat from a year earlier, as the company continues to struggle with slowing demand for online ads and stiffer competition.
Guru’s Note: Bad news but 1500 employees still better than the scuttlebutt about 3,500 workers being slashed.

The Internet Destroying Our Families? Not So Fast, Says New Pew Study.
Since the advent of the ‘Internets’, pundits have been pontificating about technology’s role in the brewing break-up of the American family.
Stories about bleary-eyed kids mesmerized by the PC instead of Mom’s meatloaf, chattering on the cell with their bffs instead of playing catch with Dad and IM-ing from the basement rec room to say ’sweet dreams’ have been rampant for years.
Which is why this Digital Parent is so thrilled with today’s release of a new study by the Pew Internet & American Life Project, which says among all kinds of households, the traditional “nuclear” family has the highest rate of technology use and ownership. Tech-friendly connectedness and sharing of things online is common.
This is true. My daughter told me yesterday she had received three ‘fart’ youtube links from her Dad.
The Pew study found that households with a married couple and minor children are more likely than other household types - including single adults, homes with unrelated adults such as roommates or group homes, or couples without children - to have mobile phones and use the Internet.
The nationwide survey of 2,252 adults shows technology heavily influencing family life, letting parents and children stay in touch more regularly and view material online together. The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.3 percentage points.
Some of the key findings include:
• Cell phones and high-speed Internet connections are common: 89% of married-with-children households own multiple cell phones, and 66% have high-speed Internet connections - well above the national average of 52% for all households, according to Pew.
• 42% of parents contact their children every day via cell phone, making cell phones the most popular communication tool between parents and children.
• 52% of married-with-children households go online together at least a few times a week, and another 34% of those families have “shared screen moments” at least occasionally.
• 70% of couples in which both partners own a mobile phone contact each other daily to say hello or chat, while 54% of couples who have only one or no cell phones do.
• 64% of couples in which both partners own a cell phone contact each other daily to coordinate their schedules; 47% of couples who have one or no cell phones do.
And staying connected through technology doesn’t mean sacrificing traditional forms of family togetherness such as sharing a meal. About 80% of families with multiple cell phones or multiple computers said they had dinner together every day or almost every day, according to Pew.
“One thing that surprised me is how together American families are now,” said Barry Wellman, sociology professor at the University of Toronto and an author of the study. “There is always a lot of information - a lot of hype - about how things are falling apart, and the latest boogeyman has been the Internet.
“What we are getting is that people are using it to be connected during the day and then at night and weekends they are staying together - they are not going their separate ways.”
And just in case they do go their separate ways — like off to college — this connectedness may actually increase. I always know where my daughter is at midnight on a Saturday night in Berkeley. I simply check her Facebook status.

New From GMail Labs: Stop Sending Mail You’ll Later Regret.
We love this new Gmail feature — and only wish it was available for phones.
Monday, October 06, 2008 6:25 PM
Posted by Jon Perlow, Gmail engineer
Sometimes I send messages I shouldn’t send. Like the time I told that girl I had a crush on her over text message. Or the time I sent that late night email to my ex-girlfriend that we should get back together. Gmail can’t always prevent you from sending messages you might later regret, but today we’re launching a new Labs feature I wrote called Mail Goggles which may help.
When you enable Mail Goggles, it will check that you’re really sure you want to send that late night Friday email. And what better way to check than by making you solve a few simple math problems after you click send to verify you’re in the right state of mind?
By default, Mail Goggles is only active late night on the weekend as that is the time you’re most likely to need it. Once enabled, you can adjust when it’s active in the General settings.

Born to Blog? Meet SocialNetworking for Babies: TotSpot, Kidmondo, Lil’Grams and Odadeo.
Social networks have a whole new target audience: babies. Despite the fact that studies show record global growth for current world leader Facebook (153%) and spurts for Hi5 and even Friendster, that growth is bound to slow as grown-ups run out of fellow grown-ups to friend request. The solution? The diaper set.
Today, the modern equivalents of the now-dinosaur ‘Sears Photo Studio baby brag book’ are bubbling up everywhere. Social networks start while the babe is still a bump with blossoming sites like TheCradle.com, a hot new lifestyle destination for new pregnancy and new parenthood. The site, currently in beta, has easy-to-use social networking features for Moms to be, with personalizable web page templates, thriving message boards and a wealth of practical information. Moms can connect with other Moms who are in the same stage of pregnancy to share and support each other.
By the baby is born, he or she is already Google-able and ready to toddle (or twitter) over to the next step: their very own social network.
While bebe is napping (or busy studying Mandarin with his nanny), Mom and Dad can check out these growing choices:
Totspot: The brainchild of a bunch of family-oriented Harvard grads, TotSpot is a place to create a private page about your kids and share it with friends and family. It’s an online scrapbook and community for babies, kids, and their parents.
Kidmondo: Kidmondo was founded by a couple in New York City, who - after the birth of their second child - couldn’t find an compelling way to chronicle and share news about their kids with family and friends around the world. The mission: Kidmondo is a comprehensive online baby journal and organizer that allows parents and caregivers to chronicle their child’s life and share it with friends and family in a safe environment.
Guru’s Note: Kidmondo’s founders very smartly included ‘caregivers’ in their mission statement. This is a fact of today’s life — the caregiver may very likely be the one to witness the first step or horrors! rub whiskey on the gums of that teething babe. Takeaway: Hire a nanny whose skills extend from web 2.0 to wee-wee.
Lil’Grams: This microblogging site — dubbed twittering for toddlers — comes from new father and entrepreneur Greg Narain of Blue Whale Labs. The mission: Lil’Grams is a real-time baby book designed to make it absolutely simple for parents to capture the precious moments of their baby’s life and share it with their family and friends instantly. The most precious moments of your baby’s life are countless - but they only come once. With LittleGrams, you can keep, track, and share anything about your baby.
Odadeo: Created by Stef Lewandowski, the site was soft launched on Father’s Day of last year but appears to still be in beta. The mission: Odadeo is the site that aims to answer the question “how am I going to be a better dad?” Whether you’re veteran of fatherhood or an outright newbie, Odadeo looks built to to help you make your father-son and father-daughter connections that much more Web 2.0-compliant.
Guru’s Note: There are some 85 million Moms in the U.S. and most of them seem to be on the Internet busily blogging (I’m one of them). So it’s about time the Dads start turning up in droves. One of the most frequently asked questions at events where Kat Gordon of Mom-marketing company, Maternal Instinct, and I team up to speak is: What about the Dads?

The TechCrunch50

Even though Silicon Valley pretends to be utterly immune to LaLa celebrities, there was no shortage of fans for Ashton Kutcher’s appearance yesterday at Day 1 of TechCrunch50 at the San Francisco Design Center. The actor and creative director, late of ooma and now of BlahGirls, was on stage to launch his oh-so-grrly interactive video site.
Whittled down from 1000, the event features 52 startups plus all the tech luminaries who skipped the trip to San Diego and DemoFall.
