In Honor of Labor Day: The Best City For Creative Workers
The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City and was the brainchild of the Central Labor Union. Eventually the holiday was officially moved to occur on the first Monday in September, thereby giving workerbees throughout the U.S. an extra day to make Beer in the Butt Chicken.
Quelle irony then, that this year’s hottest city for Creatives to live and work is London. According to Wired magazine’s Global City of the Year article, one in every eight Londoners — more than 550,000 people — works either in a creative job or in a creative industry. Two out of three international ad agencies have their European headquarters in London, with other multinational companies opening design centers in the city.
London also seems to be calling loud and clear to the young, with an astounding 70% proportion of Londoners aged under 45. Including, of course, ‘creative worker’ Amy Winehouse.
Wired quotes Christopher Bailey, design director of Burberry, the once-dowdy, now fashionable style darling. “Creativity thrives here. It has to do with the people, their attitude, vibrance and energy. You can work away in your little world and have your moment in the sun. That’s very empowering.”
